GM reveals new direction with the PUMA

Watch the video.

Who saw this one coming?!

The facts: GM has partnered with Segway to bring us this new, street-legal vehicle aimed at urban traffic. It has two wheels (well, technically six) and uses absolutely NO gas, yet can run at up to 35 miles an hour and travel 35 miles on a single charge.

When I saw the first advertisements for the Smart Car, I laughed at it and claimed that they would never become popular. Now, years later, I've clearly been proven wrong in my prediction. And it looks the same here. I'd love to knock this new product, and poke fun at its looks, and crack a few more Segway jokes.
But having lived in downtown Chicago, it only takes a moment before I start to realize how useful this would be:
  • No gas cost
  • In urban driving, 35 MPH is not so limiting
  • Low cost (compared to a car)
  • Safety (compared to a motorcycle)
and so on.

This is a smart move by GM, and I truly believe these (or something like them) will become popular and change the face of urban driving.
